Wollongong Harmony Chorus is an "a cappella" singing group with about 45 members who just love to sing in harmony under the musical direction of Jan McCarthy. They are members of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organisation of around 30,000
women singers committed to the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performance.
The Chorus has been entertaining audiences for 15 years now and regularly competes in the Regional Competition for Sweet Adelines choruses in Australia where it has consistently placed in the top six since 1998, coming in as high as second twice. Performances are done throughout the year for many community groups and for the past three years there has been a very popular concert in May with the Sydney Male Choir. Visitors and new members are always welcome.
Rehearsals are held each Wednesday night at the Port Kembla RSL Club where the contact was first made with Songul Demirci, President of the Friendship for Life organisation. Songul invited the chorus to be a part of the 2007 ceremony, singing both the Turkish and Australian national anthems. The chorus ladies willingly spent many hours, with Songul's help, learning to pronounce the Turkish words and were delighted to be a part of the moving ceremony on April 21 st 2007.
